SLIS 703 assignment

September 1, 2009

24 students in SLIS 703 this term and the class is taught on campus.  Feili shared the assignment with me for the print collection and I’ve put it in the bottom drawer.  They’ll be in the library Wednesday evening (Sept 2nd) for a little overview.  They’ll be back!  (At least they better be).      mb

Self Help Books for Psyc class

August 25, 2009

Hey Gang, add your strategies . . . tonight a guy from a psyc class came in needing three self-help books. On anything, just had to be self-help.

Strategies Sharon and I tried:
keyword search : “how to” and psycholog** which led to subject search: self actualization psychology

keyword search: “ways to”

The books tend to have big subjects like: change, character, interpersonal communication, interpersonal relations, life skills, optimism, success. You can try wading through those subjects.

Public libraries (at least RCPL) use “self help techniques”. You’ll find 14 hits in TCL catalog with it.

Harvard Business Review required for nursing management class

April 1, 2009

Have had several students who must find something in Harvard Business Review for a nursing class. Use Business Source Premier. Indexes the title and supplies the most fulltext.

SPAN 122 Movie Project

March 31, 2009

Had two students this afternoon come in looking for Spanish-language movies for a project in Spanish 122.  The teacher has an excellent list of movies to select from posted in Blackboard, including where to find it.  If we have it, the final column will say “TC” and give the format(s) we have.  I’ve had to pull it up twice to look for titles (the students do not have good memories nor are they the best spanish spellers) so I’m going to cheat and post the information.  I’ll put it below the “More” line so it won’t take up tons of space.

Business Communication questions, MGMT 250 Stratton

March 24, 2009

We’ve had these questions in the past and they can be phrased different ways.  I’ve had students asking to find info on how to teach business communication and also for articles about the importance of communication in business

Another twist you might hear is sources need to be from the government or university sponsored research.

The instructor was in the library today so I asked him.  Never mind about the government or university sponsored research angle.  He’s trying to steer them towards academic sources (and yet when he was showing a student the search in GamecockPowerSearch of business communication and trends, an article from Wall St Journal seemed to be okay).

Mostly my advice is to not sweat this.  The goal is to use library databases whether it be through GPS, Business Source Premier, ERIC whatever.

Criminal Justice assignment

February 19, 2009

Due Wednesday February 25th – More explanation on assignment at ref. desk

“For this assignment, you must find a total of five articles on one of the research topics listed below. You may use three articles you can find online, either through Criminal Justice Abstracts or by searching the University of South Carolina online collection. For the other two articles, you must go to the library and find the actual paper copies of the journal (hint: these are usually older articles that are not available electronically). For each article you find online, print the first page to turn in. For those articles you find in the library, make a photocopy of the first page and turn that in. In total, you will turn in five first pages of PEER REVIEWED journal articles. Please indicate under your name which topic you selected.

ASTM Standards (American Society for Testing and Materials)

February 19, 2009

Some of you may remember the rite of spring wherein many a confused undergraduate engineering student comes in looking for ASTM standards because their professor told them we had some through the late 1990s. We do not have ASTM standards through that date; we stopped getting the print in 1987 and the microfilm got trashed. Also, the old print versions are now living out their retirement in the Annex. We do have one book that includes a dozen or so standards from 1994. It is now on Reserves for the class (EMCH 528 – Product Safety Engineering – McNeill). Also, we do NOT obtain standards through Interlibrary Loan for students – way too expensive. It summarize:

ASTM Standards
EMCH 528 – Product Safety Engineering with McNeill
Book on Reserves
No ILL for students

sources in Spanish

February 10, 2009

For those questions about wide-ranging topics, but the information must be in Spanish here are some strategies:

From the Electronic Resources page

- Lexis Nexis > News > Spanish language news, combined (remember to change the date period!).  Search needs to be in Spanish since that’s the language of the sources.

- JSTOR.  Language limit on advance search screen.  Enter terms in Spanish.

- search Web of Science (all topics possible so not a bad choice).  Use pull-down to search Language and enter Spanish.  Add topic words in English.  Nice convenience of  FindText and library catalog searching to see if we have the periodical.

To find books, search the library catalog

-with an advanced keyword search in the library catalog and set language limit.  Topic words should be in English.  Iif title is in Spanish the book will be in Spanish.

Other possibilities in the Reference area

- use HAPI (Hispanic American Periodicals Index) Reference Index Shelves Z 1605 .H16.  (most recent is 2005).  If title of the article is Spanish then article will be in Spanish. Will then need to see by searching the Ejournals list and library catalog if we have the periodical.

Enciclopedia del español en los Estados Unidos : anuario del Instituto Cervantes    Reference E 184 .S75 E556 2009  (Feb 2009 on new ref book shelves).  Not all topics, but in Spanish!

- Hispanica encyclopedia [Enciclopedia hispańica] in Quickstart Reference area

- InfoTrac Onefile (but beware).  Articles will be in English but it has the machine translator

Add ideas to the list as they come to you.

Students borrowing video cameras

November 12, 2008

We get this question infrequently, to be sure, but the information is buried and NOT easy to find.  SO If you get this question, tell the students that their professor should call Sandy Molyneaux (7-6481) and check out the camera in the student’s name (the student can pick it up, I assume).  Sandy’s office is located in the basement of the Business building and she says they have plenty of equipment for student use.  The only thing is that none of it is digital; it’s all VHS video camcorder-type equipment.

SLIS 703, PROMT Indexes

October 7, 2008

Students in Tu’s SLIS 703 may ask about a “PROMT Index” that Dr. Tu says is available from TCL.  Turns out if you read the description (thanks for the database Abouts Beki!) you learn that the content from “Predicasts’ PROMT and Newsletter databases are fully integrated in “Business & Company Resource Center.”
