Theatre class, warehouses in East Los Angeles

July 27, 2009

Cool question you may get as well.  There’s a theater class with an assignment (printed page even!) to find out about warehouses in East Los Angeles.  They need to find images and a sense of what the neighborhood is like, for example the types of businesses.  All to support creating scenery or imagining a play in that setting.

Here’s what I did.

On the academic side

subject search in catalog on East Los Angeles.  East Los Angeles:  History of a Barrio could be full of word images

tried searches for Los Angeles guidebooks, but our results not so helpful

On the really helpful side

Google Images “East Los Angeles”

Wikipedia entry on “East Los Angeles”  links to many images, neighborhood information

with a better sense of the area, Google Maps and using the Traffic shots

The student I helped was satisfied with that, but seems like there could be more good stuff on the web.  Ideas to get at it?

Guided Reading (Education) Assignment

July 22, 2009

Got one person at the desk yesterday asking for info on guided reading and just got a phone call at my desk about this. . . so you may get the question too.

Nothing terribly sophisticated required.

LCSH: guided reading is a subject. Not a lot, keyword search will find more (but not overwhelming results )and some of it good. PASCAL Delivers could come in to play if entire class has to do.

Education Fulltext: Guided Reading Method is subject.
ERIC: no descriptor for this concept, but will pull fine from the abstract.

Good example of a time you might want to use the combined “Education Fulltext and ERIC” (you will find this on the ER listing, uses WilsonWeb interface.

Another reason not use webmail in Firefox . . .

July 16, 2009

Trying to access webmail in the pods via Firefox is bringing up a security certificate error. You can still get to webmail by clicking the Add excception link and following the prompts. Or you can by-pass all these issues and the others in Firefox and just use IE.

Because firefox in the pods is login-dependent we cannot do the override before folks login.

Access to BT&C should be back up now.

Currently no access to BT&C through the catalog or the ER database. Tech Services is on the case.

Columbia Campus E-Books migration

July 10, 2009

The Dekker e-books on the InformaWorld site are being migrated to a new site. If you search on the InformaWorld site and get the message “Sorry – record recently removed from database“, try the new url – http://sc.etailer.dpsl.net.
It will take time for our catalogers to update the catalog links (some 200 entries).

Tony added the new URL to the proxy, and I’ve updated the ER database.  If a patron is having problems accessing a Taylor & Francis eBook from the catalog, you can direct them to the “Taylor & Francis eBooks” entry on the ER database then search by title/author/etc.
