February 20, 2007Just an FYI that RCPL’s catalog is unable to execute searches. It has been down since Monday morning. They are having severe hardware problems. It could be a while so just keep trying.
There is a note posted on their website and of course I will know when I see a smile on my spouse’s face!

African American Reconstruction legislators or lawmakers
February 19, 2007This weekend Josh encountered a group from an African American Studies class wanting to locate sources in TCL that would list African American politicians in
South Carolina during the Reconstruction Era.
The following sources would be helpful:
JSTOR search
- The following book has a very detailed listing that I have copied and left in the vertical file under “African Americans—Politicians”. There are approximately 6 copies and only 1 not checked out Also available in E-format.E185.93 .S7 H64
- Black over white : Negro political leadership in
South Carolina during Reconstruction, Holt. - Once you have a name, of course BGMI would indicate other sources for biographical info.
- The following reference sources have brief bios on most of them with/photo:
- Freedom’s Lawmakers, Foner Ref, E 185.96 .F64 1996
- Biographical Annals of the Civil Government of the
United States, Lanman, Ref. E176.L292
- When open, the South Caroliniana, of course, should be recommended.

Standards – ASTM Update!
February 14, 2007**Too many students needed standards so Bob talked to prof and prof decided to tell students not to order standards. They will find another way to do assignment.**
ILL will get copies of standards for students via the ILL Express system. They do not have to pay. They will need a standards #. I think using IEEExplore or the ASTM web site will help identify a number. – Bob is working with the faculty member on this assignment. –
Community folks (not USC affiliated have to pay).

February 12, 2007Watch out for inaccurate holdings of Science Direct titles in TDNet. We received a lot of new titles and Karen McMullen is having to check holdings for each one. The older issues may have abstracts only.

Science Reference Materials Checkout
February 1, 2007We allow USC students and faculty to check out Science Reference materials either overnight , a day or two or for a whole weekend at the discretion of the librarian on duty and the presence of a a valid USC I.D.
There is a folder of Authorization Forms in the bottom drawer of the Science Desk on the left hand side, first file.
The librarian should have the student fill out both top and bottom halfs. The top half goes in the book for the student to show the guard and the bottom half stays in the file where the forms were originally.
