The Dekker e-books on the InformaWorld site are being migrated to a new site. If you search on the InformaWorld site and get the message “Sorry – record recently removed from database“, try the new url – http://sc.etailer.dpsl.net.
It will take time for our catalogers to update the catalog links (some 200 entries).

Columbia Campus E-Books migration
July 10, 2009 by uscreferencepodland tricks
June 8, 2009 by uscreferenceHi Everyone, Two new things I recently discovered in Podland.
1. Internet Explorer is having problems with attachments. Today a student worked on a word document in the pods and emailed a copy of the article to himself. He returned to work on this document and discover that IE had compressed(created a zip file) his file and that it could not be opened. I had him open his email in Mozilla and the file open without issue.
2. Some websites are not working with Internet Explorer 8. Blackboard is(was) one of these problem databases. There is also a marketing course website that has issues with IE 8. Sorry, but I can’t remember the course. To get around this, use the compatibility view button. I have attached a file that shows how this button looks.

Headphones and Conductor’s Institute
June 7, 2009 by uscreferenceThere’s a Conductor’s Institute (musical, not train) on campus through most of June. They live on campus and have a temporary housing card but no other id. Nice guy asked to use headphones but Circ couldn’t check any out to him. Thankfully Josh was around for the building count and he reminded me we have a pair in the drawer below the name tags. (The guy had a clean head so I let him borrow them.)

Off-campus access during summer
May 5, 2009 by uscreferenceWe are starting to get questions about off-campus access to Library databases during the summer. The short of the story is that you must be currently enrolled or employed to access databases remotely. The exception lies with PhD students. For them, if they were enrolled in the spring semester they will have access throughout the summer also. Apparently, the contracts were reworked to provide them with access. This is NOT the case for MS students. If you don’t feel comfortable with saying the party line, send it to Alma. Alma says, “Please just send them to me, I get a lot of people like that in the summer.”

ILL “user not found in database”
May 4, 2009 by uscreferenceToday I tried to login to my ILL account (to demo for a patron) and could not. I got past the password screen and was taken to a page with this message:
“This user was not found in the database. Please contact the Interlibrary Loan Department for assistance…. To reinstate your service.” The message and instructions are very clear and include ILL’s contact info.
Timothy had to update my Millennium record with my new barcode number. This IS A RARE occurrence, but could continue until all the weirdo records are fixed.

SciFinder Scholar & SciFinder Web
April 28, 2009 by uscreferenceJust a friendly reminder from your science librarian. You may occassionally get a question about accessing SciFinder Scholar or that it is no longer working for someone. You can just refer them to me or you can let them know about these options:
1. SciFinder Web – The latest way to access SciFinder, patrons just register once using their USC email address to create a user name and password. They can then access SciFinder through any browser over the web. Big Plus #1: Works greats with PCs AND Macs. Big PLus #2: Searching is availble off-campus via EZ-Proxy (not available with option below)
2. SciFinder Scholar 2007 Client. The 2007 (latest) version of SciFinder Scholar is available for download and works just as the old versions did. Only available off-campus through VPN.
Both of these options are listed under “S” in the ER database. Clicking About will provide links to the appropriate registration or download page.
Wall Street Journal & Business Students Abroad
April 24, 2009 by uscreferenceIf you get a business student who is studying aboard and wants remote access to the Wall Street Journal, please refer them to Dwight or Christy. They can get them access.
Course Description Requests
April 24, 2009 by uscreferenceVirginia,
I’ve recently been told by the Registrar’s Office that any requests for course descriptions should go through their office so they can be “official.” And 2008-2009 is the last year for printed catalogs. They are moving to a database system that I will not have access to.
Would you let your reference folks know?
